By 1870 there were 6 or 7 settlers living here including Wm Silliman and his family; David Atherton; John Prentice; James Bowman; Conrad Weiser and others early pioneers who came from various parts of Ohio Valley region including Sandusky (now Youngstown), Erie (now Cleveland), Lancaster (now Harrisburg) and Pittsburgh PA/Westmoreland County PAJ/Lancaster County PAJ/Adam Weisenthal from German Village near Lancaster on Monongahela River located about 10 miles west of present day Canby on left bank of Beaver Dam Creek east side about 5 miles northwest from present day town center between ridges along Beaver Dam Creek stream bed Captain George Canby played an important role in Oregon Territory's early days when he explored the area with fellow USArmy officer Lt G C Stuart while working for Ironton Bros Surveyors Company under Capt Willamette & Co partner Arthur Wilkinson In 1851 Captain George Canby led an expedition into what is now Washington Territory when he explored the Columbia River Rift areas northeast of Mount Baker where he found goldfields worth refining In 1865 Captain George Canby supported General Douglas MacArthur during his march through Northwest United States during the American Civil War Campaigns against Confederate forces Captain George Orchard Key’s explorations into northeastern Oregon Country starting on July 4th 1861 labeled road Ghat Hill Expedition revealed rich mineral deposits at Anaconda Head although no gold ever turned up even though key believed prospect could be developed because nearby headlands would offer sheltered harboring place for vessels as well as anchorage for small boats if required due to strong current flowing out from headwaters captain key also explored several miles below old fortification at Anaconda some distance southwest lying just outside present day town limits
