However, after the armistice arrived on November 11th, 1918, the community began to decline as stores closed their doors and people returned home to their families. By 1920, only a few hundred residents remained in Canbytown. In 1951, a expressway called State Route 97X was constructed through Canbytown with hopes of drew more traffic to the area from neighboring townships such as Milwaukie and Beaverton. However, this project did not go well and many businesses closed down during construction due to lack of customers or competition from other townships that had similar projects going on. By 1970, only a handful of homes remained in canbytown while most businesses had either gone out of business or moved away altogether. In 2007, plans were made to redevelop canbytown into an urban park following years of research into what could be done with what was left after years of development around Portland's Central Business District (CBD). After much discussion and public outcry within canbytown itself about how such an arrangement would impact local businesses which depended on continued trade with surrounding municipalities, the idea was scrapped after a public letter from Mayor Donny Schmidt asking for input on what should be done instead led him to approve moving forward with plans forcanbysparkinggarage400ft2anda plentyofparking spots
