Canby is a town in Linn County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Eugene–Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Canby were two fur trappers, Jedediah Smith and David Thompson, on their way from the Great Lakes region to the Pacific Northwest in 1827. They explored the area around present-day Canby when they stopped there in February 1828 on their way back from an expedition that mapped much of what would become Oregon. In 1830, Wiley Boggs established a flour mill here which continued to be in operation until 1865; it produced wheat flour for local markets and exported its product to Europe and North America. In 1832, Methodist missionaries came to Canby and began preaching Christianity here. With increasing demand for goods brought by American traders into Portland due to prohibition efforts during the 1830s, Canby became an important center of trade within central Oregon during this time period. In 1851, wagon roads were built through parts of Linn County linking all parts of Oregon with each other as well as making it easier for settlers to move goods between these regions. This stimulated growth within Canby as people started coming here looking for new opportunities rather than staying in one place for too long. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Canby and it had developed into a small but busy community with businesses such as stores, churches (around 1853), a school (1857), mills (1865-1867), and a post office (1877). In 1870-71,canbysenior Elias Howe built an impressive new frame courthouse near wherepresent-day Willamette University stands today – becoming one of Northern Oregon’s earliest examples of modern architecture dating back to this era! During World War II many farmers joined forces with US military forces as part of various engagements throughout Northwestern Oregon including battles at The Heckscher Bridge overriver from Salem southward into Linn County including Battle Creek Bridge just north of present day Canby; Battle Ground Ridge east of present day Jacksonville; Siuslaw River Valley Campaign against Japanese troops alongsnw sidethe riverbanks just northofpresent day Burns Lake; Anden Pass Campaign against Japanese troops across Anden Pass from Butte Junction eastwardintoLinn Countyand final engagement against Japan at Klamath Falls outside Ofallon – resulting in more than 50 casualties among US military personnel involved! Canby was founded in 1857 by Doctor George Canby and his wife, Susan. The town was named for the canals that ran through it. In 1892, Canby became a city.
