Canby is a small town in Oregon, United States. It is located in the Siuslaw Valley region of the state and has a population of around 400. The community was founded in 1885 by George Canby and his family. Canby became an incorporated city in 1932. The name "Canby" comes from the word "canoe." The town began as a frontier farmstead on the Willamette River. In 1885, George Canby and his wife, Lucilla, moved to what is now Canby from Portland, Oregon. They opened a small seed company and started cattle breeding operations that would become one of the largest in Oregon. After Lucilla's death in 1903, George took over her business operation and it continued until his death in 1944. The town was renamed for him on July 1st, 1944. After World War II ended, Canby experienced rapid growth as people returned to the area after moving away during the war boom years. In 1972, Mayor Don Fowler proposed annexing neighboring towns Springdale and La Grande into Canby to create more space within the city limits but this proposal was opposed by local residents who felt their communities were adequate without annexing them. In 1978, voters passed an ordinance allowing annexed municipalities to vote on whether or not they should be merged with their larger neighbor but this measure failed to pass when merchants objected to having their services taken away by another municipality with more money and less crime statistics than their own hometowns. In 1984, Mayor Don Fowler proposed annexing nearby communities La Grande and Springdale into Canby again but this proposal also failed when merchants objected to having their services taken away by another municipality with more money and less crime statistics than their own hometowns once again). Canby is a small town in the Portland metropolitan area, located about 25 miles south of downtown Portland on the banks of the Willamette River. The population was 7,752 at the 2000 census. Canby is one of Oregon's oldest towns and has been around since 1853. The first permanent settler in Canby was James Purdy, who arrived in 1853. Canby soon became a hub for transportation and commerce due to its location on the river and its close proximity toPortland. The town developed into an agricultural center with production of hay, beans, woolen cloths, tomatoes, potatoes, apples and other vegetables. Canby also became a popular summer tourist destination due to its wide variety of attractions including hiking and swimming holes as well as educational programs from local schools. In 1902, the Oregon Railway Commission (ORC) built the first track within what would become Oregon City limits when it purchased land adjacent to then-unincorporated Canby from Jesse Hickey for $1 million dollars. At that time, Oregon City was only a small farming community consisting of approximately 100 residents near Interstate 5 and State Street along the east bank of the Willamette River.
