This rifle was designed specifically for military use and featured a number of innovations including an adjustable stock and bandoleer magazine that allowed it to be fired using both hands simultaneously. The Model 1886 helped make Winchester one of the leading firearms companies in the world. The early 1900s were difficult for firearms manufacturers because World War I had caused a large demand for new weapons but also created new opportunities for new businesses such as ammunition manufacture and firearm accessory manufacturing. In 1916, Sturm Ruger & Co., Ltd., founded by America’s first mass-produced pistol manufacturer, began producing barrels for various type pistols under license from various handgun manufacturers throughout Europe. The canals that carried water to Canby from nearby reservoirs were key to its development as an agricultural town; today, many of the area's farms are still in operation. In recent years, Canby has experienced growth as a mobile home community and resort destination. Canby's history reflects its location on one of North America's most important waterways: The Willamette River forms much of its border with Linn County to the south and east, while its namesake river also bounds Hood River County to the north. The townsites at various points along both rivers have been occupied by different communities over time - including two stints as military bases during World War II - but all have ultimately formed one continuous village or community effort known locally as "the Weavers." Today, there is only one remaining original house in Canby: That of Mayor Neil Sibley (1927-2005). Other buildings dating back to 1879 include a Methodist church and school building (now used as office space), a post office (now closed), two general stores/grocery stores/poultry establishments (both closed), two log cotton mills (one now defunct), three churches (First Baptist Congregationalist; Bethel Lutheran; Presbyterian) and four schools - including six primary grades plus five high schools; Canbyside Elementary School remains open today unchanged since it opened in 1907 followed by fish Hatchery & Farm until 1958 when it was replaced by Union High School which served students from Grades 6-12 before being merged into Morrison Middle School which served students from Grades 7-8 until 1982 when it was replaced by Morrison Junior High School which serves students from Grades 9-12 today
