Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Canby, Oregon. The first gun magazine in the area was established in 1885 by Wm. H. Clements and F.W. Beecham, two of the early settlers in the town of Canby. At that time, there were only six guns permitted to be owned per person in Oregon and ammunition was also limited to 10 rounds per gun. In 1907, the Oregon Legislature passed an act authorizing the creation of a state firearms board with the purpose of regulating firearm possession and trade within Oregon. The board met for the first time on May 1, 1907 and approved the design of a new rifle magazine which would become known as "The Gun Digest". That same year saw another significant event when John Wray became president of National Firearms Association (NFA) and decided to establish a bureau at NFA headquarters in Chicago with the goal of promotingfirearms education and sales throughout America. On July 29, 1907, The Gun Digest published its first edition which contained information on pistols, rifles, shotguns and handguns. This publication quickly became one of Oregon's most popular sources for firearm information and instruction; it continued to be published until 1984! In 1915-16, "The Gun Digest" sponsored an annual firearms exhibition entitled "The Worlds Fair Of Arms" which took place at Portland’s State Fairgrounds across from PDX Park (now Albatross Point Park). Over 50 exhibitors displayed their latest weapons systems including machineguns & artillery pieces! As part of this event’s sponsorship, The Gun Digest furnished free catalogues to all attendees! During World War II (1939-1945), Canby residents produced over 9 million pounds (4tons) of munitions for military use alone! Some local businesses such as J&L Machine Works turned out Hundreds OF Rifle Cartridgeshells each week during WWII!!! One resident who made a significant contribution to our community during wartime is Mrs. Ruth Steer who operated her husband's barbeque business next door from 1941 thru 1945 during which time she supplied food for Army camps located near her home(s)! Mrs. Steer donated many items from her barbeque restaurant back into our community museum - these items include 6mmmachineguns (.30 caliber), 20mm cannon shells (.50 caliber), 2 inch mortar rounds (.50 caliber), hand grenades & other explosives etc... Today we continue to enjoy excellent BBQ restaurants all around town thanks to Mrs . Ruth Steer!!!

Canby is a small town in Oregon, United States. The population was 651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Willamette River between Portland and Salem. Canby was founded in 1853 by farmers looking for a place to raise crops and sell goods. The first store opened in 1854, and the first post office was established in 1865. Canby's economy changed when the railroad arrived in 1870, which made it easier for people to get around and buy things from farther away. In 1902, Canby became the site of what is now known as America's Oldest High School. The school served grades 7-12 until 1962, when it merged with Multnomah County High School to form Multnomah County Technical College (MCTC). Canby has had two mayors since its incorporation as a town: Lloyd Andrus from 1907 to 1913 and Charles Haddon Wright from 1915 to 1923. The history of Canby goes back many years before any incorporated communities were formed thereabouts; but during late 1800s most of present day populated areas including Ortonville, Beaverton & Hood River were all part of agricultural region where wheat grown & exported varieties took center stage economically due to high demand for flour throughout US (& Europe) during that time period; however some residential area near current downtown was developed prior to this timeframe by early pioneers who thoughtHQ would be attractive place To call home
