As part of Portland's plan to save money by ending contract negotiations before winter sets in (and thus avoid potential problems with traffic), all Amtrak services were cancelled between Salem and Bend on December 15th 1991- January 6th 1992; however passengers could still use those routes through Bend using buses or cars from downtownPortland until January 7th 1992 when they switched to using Highway 97 which ran parallel to Interstate 5 south past Beaverton until reaching Willamette Valley where it turned north towards Eugene In 2002-2003 there was talk about reopening Amtrak service into Hatfield/Canby but this never happened
