Canby is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Multnomah County. Canby is located on the Willamette River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). The first Europeans to visit what is nowMultnomah County were fur traders in the early 1800s. In 1824, Lewis and Clark passed through Canby on their way from Portland to the Rocky Mountains. They noted that the riverbanks were full of "tall trees with long white branches," which they called "the White Cliffs." Canby was founded by Johnathon Canby in 1851 as a post office on the banks of the Willamette River. The community quickly grew into a small town., with a school, store, and two churches. By 1870, Canby had an estimated population of 100 people. In 1881, it became part of Multnomah County when it was established following statehood within Oregon. In 1907, John Juhl built his first home in Canby after coming to America from Germany via Ellis Island.. He remained active in local politics for many years until he died in 1984 aged 95 years old. Juhl's home remains standing today as one of Multnomah County's most recognizable landmarks. Canby is a small community in the western Oregon Coast Range, about 165 miles east of Portland. The town was founded in 1854 by entrepreneur Isaac Canby and his family. It became an important railroad junction and commercial center during the 19th century. In the 20th century, Canby saw rapid growth as a result of its status as a military base and then as an agricultural center. Today, it remains a bedroom community with strong retail and tourist attractions. Isaac Canby was born on October 21, 1819, in Magna (now part of Salem), England. He emigrated to America in 1841 and arrived in Oregon that year with his family. Canby worked his way up through local businesses before starting his own business, the Iverson-Canby Provisional Store Company, in 1850. The store soon became one of the most prominent institutions in the town. In 1853, he purchased land around present-day Canby from David Dudley Warner for $10 per acre – one of the largest purchases ever made by Canby himself. The land would later become known as Warner Ranching Country. During the 19th century, both Oregon Territory and California were under federal control; however, Oregon generally remained independent until 1889 when it seceded from Ulysses S Grant’s United States government following the Manifesto crisis. At this time, Canbys began to develop their holdings into what is now Warner Ranching Country today. By 1860–1861, they had acquired over 1 million acres (500 km2) of ranchland which they would continue to expand into during much of the rest of their lives – eventually covering 8 square miles (20 km2). This property included large tracts that still form much of central Willamette Valley today: portions of Coos Bay Ridgeline are located on sectionsacquired between 1865 and 1870 from John Cattail; parts extend along what is now Ayer County Road 10 south tomilepost 12 nearpresent day Grants Pass; some areas involved acquisition from other ranchers including Waddell & Burroughs who bought 6 sq mi (15 km2) at milepost 24 near present day Scammonville; etc., all within 3 miles (5 km) or less thereof…Today there are more than 6000 acres (2000 ha) irrigated within 10 miles (16 km2)of Warner Ranch Headquarters… The ranchlands were originally used for pastoral purposes but later became important for grazing sheep and cattle stations throughout much OFW Western US after Repealing d'Anson Act allowed free admission to Menominee Indians living on reservations downstream while retained hunting rights inland…. There has never been any question among experts whether these lands were taken without just compensation or gifts….. Important aspects surrounding early canbys include Isaac's gift to Townsite Township $100 each towards platting out township boundaries.. Aftermath formed first nucleus civil government 17 Feb 1861 with 5 citizens Elected From Third Ward by popular vote…..In 1863 Oliver Hallquist was elected Sheriff For First Judicial District……Aftermath dissolved 2 Jun 1865 when first judicial district was reorganized into Second Judicial District…………….Today primary industry remaining here is agriculture with cattle/sheep production accounting for most jobs
Canby is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located about 20 miles northeast of Portland. The population was 918 at the 2010 census. Canby is part of the Salem-Keizer-Bend Micropolitan Statistical Area. Canby was founded in 1881 by John Canby and his wife, Estella Hargrave. The first post office opened in 1882, and the first store was established in 1886. Canby was named after Captain George Canby who had been with the United States Coast Guard during the Spanish–American War and afterwards served as a justice of the peace for Malheur County, Oregon. The town was incorporated on November 10, 1907. The townsite that now includes parts of both Canby and Keizer were all purchased from Native Americans by settlers in 1887-88 under a land swap agreement which allowed white farmers to purchase parcels totaling 4 square miles (10 km2) while also reducing their Aboriginal title to 2 square miles (4 km2). In 1912, Jens Jensen set up his lumber business here which became one of Oregon's largest companies until it merged into International Harvester in 2002. In 1915, he built what is now known as "Jensen's Store" on Main Street which still stands today; it housed a grocery store, hardware store and several other businesses before becoming an arts & crafts shop called The Gallery later that year. A plaque commemorates this event at its current location next to the former bank building (now used as a home daycare). In 1925 local Independent School District Superintendent Drury Erikson donated land adjacent to High School for use as an elementary school; this remains today as Hoadley Elementary School across Main Street from Jensen's Store/Gallery.]] In 1951 when Multnomah County formed it included much of northeastern Oregon including most of what is now Canby; however much of what is now Macadam Township including Canby remained within Multnomah County until 1959 when it became part Of Clackamas County effective January 1st 1959].]
