Canby is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The community was laid out in 1883 by J.D. Canby and named for him. Canby's lumber yards were one of the first to be established in the area, and he became a leading figure in local logging and milling businesses. He also served as mayor from 1903 to 1905 and as a member of the town council from 1907 to 1912. Canby was incorporated as a city on December 11, 1916, after it had been approved by voters in a referendum. The city's initial population consisted of only 14 residents; however, it soon grew to more than 100 with business and residential growth coming through annexation of neighboring communities over time. In 1959, Canby became one of Oregon's "City Of History" designated destinations for history buffs interested in its role in both prohibition and prohibition-era law enforcement activity during that state's controversial dealings with alcohol usage (the latter beingcodified into Oregon law as Measure 99). In 1977, Canby annexed what used to be known as "Little Butte", giving its new citizens access to much better schools than they had before - including Douglas High School which opened its doors that fall! Little Butte has since become an anchor tenant within the larger community which continues to grow thanks largely to high schoolers who attend its namesake institution today!

Canby was founded in 1879 by John Canby and his wife, Rachel. The town was named for John Canby's father-in-law, who had been a settler in the region before arriving in Oregon. The Canbys built a log cabin on the banks of the Willamette River and opened a store there in 1881. In 1893, the Canbys donated land to build a school, which became the first public school in Oregon. The town also hosted an annual fair from 1895 to 1923. Canby experienced several economic expansions during its early years. In 1910, it attracted some 20 businesses with its new water system and railroads; by 1914, it had reached 100 residents. However, World War I caused serious financial problems for the town and its citizens; business activity decreased by half between 1918 and 1919. After the war ended, local entrepreneurs revived cannyold enterprises such as agriculture (a significant source of income until then) and lumber production; however, these endeavors proved difficult to sustain over time due to changing market conditions. In 1925–1926, Canby experienced one of its worst periods due to regional drought that damaged crops and destroyed homes; attendance at local schools plummeted by 50%. Despite this setbacks, many people chose to stay even though they were not rich enough to build their own homes or support themselves without help from others. A new era began for Canby when developer Harry Snyder purchased 3/4ths of all of the town's acres in 1951 for $1 million dollars - making it one of the most lavishly endowed towns in Oregon history (the other two being Bend). With Snyder’s purchase came major investments including new streetscape design (including plans for what is now known as “Snyder Boulevard”), enlargement of shopping malls (at Astoria Park mall), establishment of a sewage treatment plant outside town limits (to cope with rapid growth), and much more social services than ever before available within walking distance – something that continues today through programs like “Canby Reachout” which provide access to groceries delivery right inside city limits! With so much going on around them – both good AND bad – locals have come up with countless nickname names for their community:ranging from “The Town That Couldn't Die” thanks largely to downtown redevelopment efforts following Katrina – TO THE FUTURE!
