Canby is a town in Lewis County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Snake River. The first ammunition store in Canby was established by Elisha Griggs in 1875. The store closed in 1939. In 1951, Eastern Ammunition Company opened a mill and warehouse near the town to produce military ammo for the US military and government agencies. In 1978, Western Ammunition Company moved from its original location to a new building next to Eastern Ammunition Company. This company produced hunting and target ammo until 1984 when it merged with Armoury International Incorporated to become Armscor Corporation of America In 2006, Armscor Corporation of America merged with American Outdoor Brands Corporation (AOBC) effective November 15th, 2006. This change left Armscor as one of two major ammunition manufacturers within AOBC-Alliant Techsystems division
Canby is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 4,851 at the 2010 census. It lies on the bank of the Willamette River and is bordered by the towns of Corvallis to the east, La Grande to the south, and Canby to the north. The original settlers in Canby were Methodist Episcopalians from Tennessee who came overland in 1846. They built a log cabin and made their first crop with corn and beans. In 1857 they erected a store on what is now Main Street. canby post office opened in 1865. The community had a school until 1915 when it became an agricultural high school teaching classes such as agriculture, horticulture, chicken-rearing, cattle raising, dairy farming, etc., until 1973 when it closed down due to budget cuts. In 1916 local farmers formed a new society called "The Canbys" which marketed hay and straw for horses and buggies; raised chickens; produced cheese; operated a sawmill; done some fishing during floods; did some gardening (edging lawns with clover) until 1949 when they bought land near present day Riversdale Center where they continue to farm produce today. On July 1st 1898 Oregon's first electric street light was placed in Canby by J Hargrave with his new company "Hargrave Electric Light Company". At that time there were no power companies established in Oregon so this company was probably one of many early pioneers that contributed electricity to our state during this era! On December 3rd 1934 Oran Griggs donated land on which Isuzu Motors had then just started making vehicles there! This permitted construction of what would become what are now known as Park Place Shopping Center & Arena! Today this area still contains part of Isuzu’s original factory building & today you can find parts & accessories for all your Suzuki vehicles inside! Thank you Oran Griggs for all that he has done for us here at Park Place!!! Today we have another great addition to our community - Riversdale Centers shopping mall!!!!!!
