Bend, Oregon is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Oregon. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Bend is one of the oldest settlements in the area and has been inhabited for over three centuries. In 1847, an expedition led by Captain George Vancouver discovered what would eventually become Bend on his journey from Fort Victoria to Sahurupa Lake. The settlement was founded by Captains John C. Frémont and David Thompson on September 24, 1847 as Fort Wallowa near present-day Bend. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1849 when Jedediah Smith and his party traveled down the Klamath River from California searching for new land to claim for the United States. They built a trading post at what is now called Mrsadale Prairie on December 17,1849. By 1870, there were 28 buildings in Bend with a population of 1,600 people. In 1862 President Lincoln issued Executive Order No. 12802 which ordered allriver regions in Oregon under military jurisdiction until further notice to be surveyed and settled by citizens who had taken an oath to provide certain services to the government such as “ defending this country against external aggression” according to Robert Safford’s History of Oregon Volumes I-VI (1892). This order resulted in many pioneers coming westward including Captain David Thompson who set out from Fort Wallowa on horseback with Lt.(jg) George Armstrong Healy Jr.,February 10th 1863 looking for land that he claimed lay between Butte and Gold Hill Rivers east of Umatilla Lakes National Park .
