In 1850, Oregon was purchased by the United States from Mexico. In 1853, Congress passed the Indian Appropriations Act which authorized the purchase of land in Oregon for the creation of a national park. The first structure to be built in Oregon was a small lighthouse on Cape Disappointment. In 1875, America's first Alcatel-Lucent telephone system was inaugurated atCorvallis Station. In 1923, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) opened its radio station at Portland after purchasing KGW from the Bell Telephone Company. On October 19, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law an act authorizing Bend's incorporation as a city. On November 1st of that year, Bend became one of only three cities in Oregon to be granted city status through ordinance rather than through treaty or election

It was first settled by people who were drawn to its natural resources--such as copper and gold--and then to its climate and scenery. In 1872, settlers organized themselves into a school district and built the first permanent buildings in bend. By 1900, Bend had a population of 1,200 people and it became an agricultural center with dry farming practices that allowed for local industries such as cheese production and printing presses during World War II. The current community was founded in 1946 when soldiers from Fort Lewis Barracks moved into what was then ruralDouglas County to serve on Project 8082 (the development of what is now downtown Bend).
In 1874, the Oregon central government decided to annex what is now Bend, Oregon. The area was already populated by Native Americans and early settlers had their homes built on high ground near the confluence of the Deschutes River and Umpqua River. In 1870, a group of men led by James Irvine prospected for gold in what is now Grants Pass. They named the area "Bend" after John bend in Scotland. The first post office was established at Bend in 1875.
