In 1875, James Beavers started a farm in what is now Beaverton and named it "Beaverton". The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on the river and access to natural resources. In 1907, the Portland and Western Railroad reached Beaverton and helped spur development in the area. In 1959, the city of Beaverton annexed part ofthe south side of Portland which added an additional 10% of its population. Today, Beaverton's economy revolves around education and business opportunities withinMultnomah County as well as goods produced by local farmers. Beaverton is located on the Willamette River, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Portland and about 25 miles (40 km) south of Salem. Beaverton has been inhabited by various tribes for more than 4,000 years. In 1853, General John C. Fremont founded the town here after his victory over the Mexican War at Buena Vista Hill. The first post office opened in 1854 and was named for General Fremont's father-in-law, James Beaversbury. In 1860, Beaverton became part of Multnomah County when it was formed from parts of Clackamas and Yamhill Counties. The City Council changed its name to Beaverton in 1916 because it felt that "the old 'Verdant Hills' district might become too Republicanized." The original name referred to what are now downtown streets as "the verdant pastures," which were part of an agricultural area then known as the Agricultural Reserve District around present day Beaverton Boulevard and SW Wallingford Drive NW. In 1957, construction began on Interstate 5 in nearby Portland and created a need for a new county seat; so Multnomah County voted to put Beaverton on its list of proposed cities for possible incorporation into their government under then-County Administrator Lloyd Jorgensen's plan called "Cityhood for All." On November 15th 1959, voters approved incorporation by charter after discussion on whether or not to include annexed areas such as Tualatin Valley along with Beaverton in order to create a contiguous metropolitan area with greater economic opportunities like Portland had experienced during Expo '67 when they lost their Exposition Commission bid to Seattle). On January 1st 1960, Mayor Neil Aspinwall proclaimed that "Beaverton has taken its place among our great American cities". By 1970 – less than two decades after incorporation – nearly 60% of all city employees worked for state agencies within one mile (1 km) of downtown; only 12% worked outside this radius!
