Beaverton, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 17,569 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and home to The University of Portland. In 1892, John J. Stevens began manufacturing safety goggles for use by miners and other workers in the copper mines of eastern Oregon. Stevens's company became Beaverton Safety Goggles Co., Incorporated on October 3, 1902. In 1924, they changed their name to "Oregon Glass Company" after selling their products through mail order from two locations - one in Beaverton and one in Eugene. The original glass manufacturer was located on Fourth Avenue NE between Macadam and Burnside Streets until it burned down on February 2nd 1915 while being used as an oven by the adjacent Pfeiffer Clothing factory; this caused a loss of $3,000 (equivalent to $ today). On December 15th 1916 Beaverton Safety Goggles Co., Incorporated went into receivership with assets valued at $829 ($ when adjusted for inflation) due to heavy losses sustained during World War I and II combined; this left the company unable to continue production despite efforts by its officers to re-establish operations before liquidation occurred on September 12th 1947. According to business records from that time period "Beaverton Glass Company" continued as an unincorporated nonprofit organization promoted by employees until its dissolution effective September 12th 1947." It grew rapidly as a result of new industrial development along the Willamette River during World War II, which created many jobs for local residents. Afterward, however, Beaverton's growth slowed due to changes in technology and economic conditions. In 2000, the city used its powers as an urban renewal district to attract businesses and housing developments that had been outside its boundaries; this led to increased crime and traffic problems. The current mayor is Ted Wheeler (D), who took office on January 1st, 2019
The first Europeans to arrive in Oregon were the Spanish, who found the area in 1807. In 1829, United States Explorers Captain John C. Frémont and his partner William H. Bent went exploring in what is now Oregon. They discovered the Columbia River and its fertile soil, which made it an ideal place to start a new country. The following year, Congress passed the Organic Act, which granted land east of the Rockies to Americans for settlement. In 1853, President James K. Polk announced that all public lands south of latitude 30 degrees north would be given to American citizens as part of the Homestead Act. The area now comprising Beaverton was included in this land grab and began growth as families arrived from eastern America to set down roots in what would become one of America's most diverse regions. In 1865, a post office was built at Beaverton on Southeast Salmon Street by Jno Waddell Foote Sr., a settler from Maine who had come overland from Canada via California. He named his new town after General Joseph Eaddy of Virginia—the first Ulysses S Grant officer killed during the Mexican-American War— because he thought Eaddy would make an excellent military governor for Oregon should hostilities break out again between Mexico and Texas over control of San Antonio de Bexar (now Austin). East Portland also received its post office in 1865; it was renamed Portland soon after becoming an incorporated city Limits within Multnomah County boundaries with Beaverton as its largest suburb
