Beaverton is located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and its history dates back to 1881. The city was founded by two brothers, George and Peter Beavers, on a tract of land that had been purchased by them from the Umpqua River. The Beavers were the first white people to live in Beaverton and they established their business district near what is now the Central Library. They also built a houseboat called "The Belle" which they used as a landing place for immigrants arriving at the port of Salem. In 1887, the Beavers sold their business district to J.B. McKeen who developed it into one of the most prosperous areas in town. McKeen erected many buildings including the old Central Library and bought land for an industrial park that included several mills along with some residences. He also built Bear Lodge which served as his home until he died in 1923. The late 1920s saw a rapid growth of Beaverton as teenage girls began working at local companies such as Sears, Roebuck & Co., Jardine's Wharf Company, Waddell Paper Company, American Rubber Company, Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company and Oregon Electric Light & Power Company. These businesses brought new life to downtown Beaverton and helped create what is now known as an “ entrepreneurial culture” which has produced many successful leaders over the years including former Mayor Neil Abercrombie and current Mayor Ted Wheeler
