Beaverton, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Washington, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Multnomah County and the second-largest city in the Portland metropolitan area. Beaverton's core is located on the south bank of Willamette River, which forms its eastern border. The river and downtown form an unbroken natural line for almost half a mile (1 km). The first Europeans to visit what is now Beaverton were fur traders who coming downriver from ports on the Pacific Ocean in search of new land to sell to American colonists. In 1811 they built Fort George Wright near what is now Downtown Beaverton. By 1830, all of Oregon had been acquired by America and Fort George Wright was abandoned. In 1847 Congress passed legislation creating Multnomah County and giving it its organized form with Beaverton as its county seat. A post office called "Beaverton" was established in 1852, but no one moved into it until 1861 when Aiden Smith became the first white settler in town after purchasing 7 acres (2 hectares) of land from David Benton. He named his new settlement "Beaverton" after Chief Joseph's village in present day Canada Creek Township, Michigan Territory where he had been born about 1840s son of a British settler father and a Natives American woman mother. With this name set up shop Smith began developing his farmstead into what would become one of Oregon's most successful commercial addresses during much of the 19th century; notably becoming involved with lumbering before that industry became nationally important; founding two banks (the First National Bank of Beaverton & Northern Trust Company), opening several restaurants including The Fountains—now known as Jackfruit—and being elected as mayor three times between 1865–1867; being influential enough such that he helped lead to passage of a state law providing for automatic annexation by any incorporated municipality within 10 miles (16 km) radius of its original capital establishment—a practice which continue until modern times He also served as trustee for Beaversontown Cemetery from 1862 until his death there on May 21st 1902 having purchased adjoining property eastward from it along Northwest Fourth Avenue for $10 per acre ($4 million today). It is the most populous city in the county and second most populous municipality in Oregon after Portland. Beaverton's history dates back to 1847 when settlers founded what would become Beaverton on land that was donated by Captain George Beavers. In 1868, the incorporated town of Beaverton became one of two cities in Multnomah County; both were located on the western bank of the river upstream from Portland. In 1924, Beaverton annexed part of nearby Hillsboro. The city proper was established in 1909 when developers purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along SE Foster Road from John A. Kappemyer for $2 million. The first building erected in downtown was a store called "The Gilded Cage" which served as headquarters for local mayors and other civic officials during prohibition days. By 1916, enrollment at Community College had reached 4500 students and business began to grow rapidly with development of new streets and neighborhoods such as "Downtown". One result of this rapid growth was an increase in traffic congestion on SE Foster Road which led to the development of one-way streets through downtown which eased flow until about 1970 when Interstate 5 bypassed it completely. In 1943, Don Freeman became mayor after winning a three-way race against incumbent Harry Jaffe and future state legislator Fred Korematsu Sr.. Freeman helped found Northwest Christian University (now known as Portland State University) and championed transportation projects including completion of MAX light rail lines north from downtown into northwest Portland; this helped revive downtown businesses along SE Foster Road while also easing traffic congestion around I-5
