Beaverton, Oregon is a city located in the Willamette Valley of central Oregon. It became an incorporated city on February 22, 1892, and was named for John C. Beaver. The first school in Beaverton was built in 1881 by Ephraim Moody and received its first students in September of that year. In 1903, Beavers Dam was constructed to provide water for the city and mills around it. Despite this benefit, Beaverton experienced heavy population growth during the 20th century due to its location along the newly developed Interstate 5 corridor. The population peaked at over 100,000 people in 1950 but has since declined markedly. Today, Beaverton residents primarily rely on their job opportunities and transportation infrastructure to support their lives.

Beaverton was founded on December 3, 1851 by James Monaghan and others as Red Hill Station on the Columbia River between what are now downtown Beaverton and Vancouver Island. The name "Beaverton" was chosen because of its resemblance to a beaver (Bathyura beaveri). In 1881, John Atherton offered to sell land to the city for $5 per acre. At first, few people lived in Beaverton because it was located on an isolated peninsula surrounded by water. But over time, development began in earnest and Beaverton became one of Portland's most populous cities with over 100,000 residents by 1920. The economy of Beaverton has been primarily service-based since its founding until the late 20th century when manufacturing began to take hold; today’s major economic sectors include education, health care services and technology parks/research facilities
