Beaverton, Oregon is home to the first gun shops in Oregon. The store was opened in 1892 by J.D. Beavers and his brother-in-law, Elisha White. At that time, Beaverton was a small farming town and there were only a few stores and businesses. The store continued to be operated by the Beavers until it closed in 1945. The next year, Ohioan Fenton Haggerty opened his own gun shop on NE Second Street in Beaverton. Haggerty was very successful at his business and continued to operate it until he died in 1957. His son, John Haggerty Jr., took over the business after his father's death. In 1976, the business merged with another gun shop called "The Gun Shop" which had been operating for several years before that. That same year, The Gun Shop moved from its original location to its current location at 5th Avenue & NE 82nd Street in Beavertontown (now part of Portland). In 1984, Don Bruceopened his own gunshop on SE Stark Street in downtown Beaverton. Bruce was very successful at his business and continued to operate it until he died in 1992. His son, Dave Bruce, took over the business after his father's death. In 1998, Don Bruce's widow sold her interest in the business to her son David Bruce Sr.. DaveBruce Sr.'s wife SisterJoanne ran the business until she passed away in 2006; thenDaveBruce Jr.'s wife Kathy ran it until her death also in 2006; then their son Christopher ran it under their daughters name from 2006 through 2016 Chris Bruce ceased operations on January 1st of 2017
Beaverton, Oregon is a city located in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 43,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area and is the largest city in that area by total population. Beaverton has been nicknamed "The City of Roses" for its many rose Petals Park and numerous rose gardens throughout town. Beaverton also has a variety of retail stores such as Sears, Macy's, JCPenney, Kmart, and Kohl's along with several high-end restaurants including L'Atelier Bouchon and Benares restaurant which have received multiple awards for their cuisine. Beaverton was founded in 1877 by John C. Dahlgren as a small farming community known as Dahlgren Prairie near present day Hillsboro Heights. In 1906 it became an incorporated city under the name of Beaverton after its founder's son John C. Dahlgren II changed his name to honor his father's long friendship with US Senator George Wickersham (D-Oregon). The first mayor was Harry Aiken who served from 1907 until 1913 when he was succeeded by Bertram Fenton. Aiken helped found the Oregon Chapter of the American Association for Justice and served as president from 1921 until 1925 before returning to private practice in 1927 He later became an editor on The Oregonian Newspaper Corporation where he remained until his death in 1961 aged 73 years old After World War II Beaverton experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to Portland and its strong industrial base which included aluminum production from 1959 until 1984; leather processing from 1965 until 1978; paper manufacturing from 1971 until 1985; printing mills from 1966 until 1987; cement production between 1962 and 1984 In 1970 local entrepreneur Don Reuss purchased 500 acres (2 km²) of forested land northeast of downtown Beaverton for commercial development which would become Central Point Resort & Casino
