Beaverton was founded in 1847 as a small Native American settlement on the eastern edge of present-day Oregon City by fur traders and miners. The city's first mayor was John A. Macdonald, who also served as its first sheriff. Beaverton grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location near Interstate 5 and its role as a transportation hub for the region. In 1970, when OregonCity merged with neighbouringSalem to form Oregon City–Beaverton, Beaverton became one of two cities in Oregon independently designated as "downtown" areas – the other beingPortland. The economic decline of the late 20th century led to a drastic drop in Beaverton's population from its peak of 43,000 in 1990 to 21,000 by 2000; however, it has since recovered somewhat and reached 25,000 residents again by 2010. Downtown Beaverton remains an important commercial and creative district and has seen substantial redevelopment over the past several decades including many new high-rise buildings completed or under construction within downtown limits alone (e.g., EnergySolutions Tower). Today much of what made downtown Beaverton so vibrant during earlier periods has been lost but some key characteristics remain such as easy access to public transportation system (including MAX light rail), large amount of open space close to arterial streetscape which provides great pedestrian & bikeability opportunities while still remaining dense with amenities like restaurants/cafés/bars/theater etc.; large number of affordable housing developments built around core retail districts; mixed use development adjacent MLK Jr./Eleanor Roosevelt parks providing significant job growth potential for low-income residents; numerous small businesses that have successfully adapted to global village economy; multimillion dollar donation from philanthropist Chip Somodevilla made possible creation of Willamette University College that offers nationally competitive undergraduate degrees in business administration and engineering
