Beaverton is home to the University of Portland, one of the largest universities in North America. The first Europeans to visit what is now Beaverton were Native Americans who called it "Wenatchee" because of its high mountain range. The area was part of the Tlingit Nation before becoming part of the United States. The city was founded on December 12, 1853 by James K. Polk, Ulysses S. Grant, and William Herbert as a town on the west side of Milwaukie River near present-day Clackamas Avenue and Third Street. The name "Beaverton" was chosen because Beaver Creek flowed through it and beavers (the local animal) had been common inhabitants there since ancient times. The first permanent settler in Beaverton was John Leland who built his home on McLoughlin Street in 1855/56. Other early settlers included Jno Crain (1828-1905), George Stephenson (1854-1943), Eli Whitney (1787-1865), Wm Seymour (died young), James Strong (1815-95), Charles Goodyear (1837-1920). In 1865, David Whitlock erected Whitlock's Store on Third Street which became one of Beaverton's most popular commercial establishments until it closed its doors in 1916 due to World War I prohibitionism among business owners within America's then newly formed Allied Powers Coalition nations during that war period known as The Great Depression; per definition: "a time when industrial production declined significantly across all sectors." It wasn't until after World War II did Beaverton become an established community with many families settled there from throughout Multnomah County including those coming during agricultural expansion such as Pioneer Williams family coming from Ontario between 1882 and 1886 who began raising chickens on their farmstead eastside at 5th & Millstream Streets NW; later they moved their operations northward along Second Avenue into what is now Fullerton where they continued operation until about 1920 when they sold out to Charles Whitman who founded Whitman Electric Light Company doing business as Clark Fielding electricity Co.; later still he merged with Western Union Telegraph Company facing antitrust charges resulting inWhitman Electric Light Company being acquired by Northern Pacific Railway company effective January 1st 1941 assets being redistributed among other various railroad companies operating within what would become Oregon thereby creating what we know today asOregon Interstate Railroad system - or simply 'the old Northwest'.
