Ashland, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, located on the Willamette River. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Ashland was founded in 1876 by Swiss-American fur traders and missionaries as a trading post on the riverbank near present day Albany. The name "Ashland" is from the local Malheur Indian word meaning "place of tule trees." The first people to live in what is now Ashland were Native Americans who gathered around a tamarack tree for gathering food during cold winter months. They hunted game and collected Turtle Dams (a type of clams) which they cooked over an open fire before eating. In 1876, German immigrants moved into what is now Ashland from Independence and started to farm land which became known as Pioneer Valley. In 1886, when Multnomah County was organized, it included parts of what are now Ashland and Albany Township and had a population of only 14 people. In 1907, Eugene despatchman George Lane bought 191 acres (72 hectares) along the Willamette River south of today's downtownAshland for $1 million dollars (). Lane named his new community after himself - Lane City -and developed it into one of the most prosperous small towns in Oregon during its early years. He built many homes using logs that he brought downriver from his logging operations in nearby Josephine County. There were also sawmills and other businesses located within walking distance of Lane City throughout its early years even though it lacked any roads or telephone service (). Lane City experienced several boom times starting with World War I until about 1930 when prices for agricultural commodities began to decline across much of North America due to margin erosion caused by technological advances such as refrigeration and machine tools . However, Lane City continued to grow throughWorld War II due largely to military procurement contracts given out by the Army Corps of Engineers () which bought large quantities of goods needed for construction projects all over Northwest America (). After World War II ended however, prices for agricultural commodities began again to rise across much of North America creating another cycleof margin erosion called 'theGreat Deindustrialization'. This led to numerous layoffs at Lane City businesses including those at sawmills as well as reductions in hours worked at mines while production increased only marginally (). Finally ,in 1984,, Lanesville amalgamated with nearby Clatsop Village making Ashland one municipality with two main streets running through it insteadof just one main street (). It wasn't until recent decades that Main Street underwent major renovation becoming more wide open with few buildings remaining inside city limits () making it easierfor pedestrians/bikersto move around without feeling confined or locked up inside city limits like many smaller American cities have become since then ().
