Ashland, Oregon is a small town in the eastern United States. It is located in Walla Walla County, about 30 miles northeast of Seattle. The population was 3,691 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashland were traders and missionaries travelling through the region in 1848-49. They named the area "Walla Walla" because of a mountain range that divided them from the nearby Puget Sound area. The name stuck and today it refers to both Ashland proper and its adjacent rural areas northeast of it. As early as 1850, settlers had started arriving in wheelbarrows or wagons, following routes that ran through timberlands near Mount labor and Bluff Lake. By 1860, there were over 50 homes and businesses in Ashland; many were built by subscription or land grants from local officials. Some early settlers were farmers who raised crops on large plantations; other residents developed businesses such as sawmills, flour mills, hotels and stores before World War I changed all that with rapid technological advances which led to an increase in demand for lumber products along with accompanying transportation challenges. With so much new development coming on line during this time period there was also an increased demand for people to get involved with politics at all levels - something which many did beginning around 1870 when county commissioners began being elected instead of appointed by wealthy owners/citizensry. This process continued until 1930 when voting rights became universal statewide thanks to passage of the Enabling Act which granted voting rights to women under 22 years old regardless of race or sex (this was not true until 1935). In 1915-16 Portland Mayor John Tilton proposed building a dam across Bull Lake downstream from Ashland so that Portland could get water for its growing streetcar system but no one wanted their town’s fishing industry destroyed! A group composed largely of farmers decided they didn’t want their water taken away either so they formed a Committee To Save The Lakeside Fishing Industry – later renamed The Friends Of Bull Lake – which succeeded in having the dam built despite strong opposition from developers including some prominent businessmen like J P Morgan who thought they would use his power to extract more money out of the project than necessary for everyone concerned!

Ashland, Oregon is a small city in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1872 by John Fenton and his wife, Lucy. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Ashland was called Canby Landing on the upper Yakima River. The area became known as Fenton's Prairie because of its fertile soil and low cost of land. In 1871, settlers set up a homestead near present-day downtown Ashland after finding good farmland there for sale. The town name comes from George Washington Carver's "The Vegetable Gardener." In 1870, Ohio entrepreneur James Gorman bought 640 acres (250 km²) of forested land east of Ashland to build a railroadside town that would be called Portland. Gorman named his new town Portland after himself and donated all the land to the state for education and development purposes. However, when Oregon became a state in 1889, Gorman's donation reverted back to the federal government so Portland never had an official name. Portland finally got its own name in 1893 when it incorporated as a municipality under Condon v Umpqua County Commissioners case (1893). That same year saw another big change for Ashland when City Council voted unanimously to rename itself "Ashland" after George Washington Carver's birthplace within walking distance of Main Street.
