Ashland, Oregon is a small town located in the Siskiyou Mountains of central Oregon. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. The name "Ashland" comes from Ohlone people and means "place of many trees." The town began as a small agricultural settlement in 1855 on the eastern edge of what is now Ashland County. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by 1910 it had a population of 1,909. By then, however, timber sales and other economic factors had eliminated much of the town's growth. Today only about 100 residents live in Ashland proper and its surrounding rural area. The origins of the town are complex but can be traced to 1855 when two men, John Crouch and George Washington Smith, purchased 640 acres (2 km²) in present-day Ashland County for $5 per acre ($25 per hectare). The land was primitive with only a few scattered trees and was not suitable for farming but it did provide an opportunity to purchase more valuable land around Bend and Springfield. Over time settlers arrived who built log cabins, erected churches, opened up businesses such as grocery stores and doctor’s offices, raised crops such as hay and potatoes, hunted animals including deer and elk, built schools (the first public school opened in 1865), collected logs for firewood or fashioned their own tools from salvaged lumber they obtained from nearby settlements. In 1909 Ashland became one of 57 towns Louisville & Portland Railway reached across Central Oregon by constructing a line between those cities on either side of Butte Pass through what is now Armstrong County. At this point most people living near the railway were transient miners or farmers who came looking for work; there were no permanent residents until after World War II when military personnel led by General Douglas MacArthur moved into parts of Central Oregon following their victory over Japan in 1945. As new residents settled there began to be changes both good and bad: some succumbed to hard times while others enjoyed easy access to education (at first free) along with easy access to resources like forests that would later become critical for development outside city boundaries
