Ashland, Oregon is a town in the U.S. state of Oregon and is the county seat of Wasco County. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metro area. One account suggests that he may have been motivated to open up this area because he found coal seams near present day McMinnville which he thought would be easily accessible by wagon trainloads transported over high ground across Willamette River valley .
