The Wheelers were among the early pioneers of what would become Ashland; they had come to start a new life after leaving their childhood home in Clinton, Connecticut." In 1870, John Fenton purchased land northeast of where Ashland stands today and founded Pendleton Agricultural Company which grew some of America's most famous crops such as wheat, corn, potatoes and roses. In 1872 he donated 8 acres (3 hectares) for housing development near his farmstead known as "Fentonville". This area became known as "Fenton Park" after him and his family lived there for many years until 1951 when it was developed into an apartment complex with retail space by Northwest Land Holdings Inc., one of Portland's larger developers during that time period. In 1907 Jethro Coffin started construction on what would become Pioneer Courthouse Square just east of town limits; this site would be renamed Pioneer Place in 1992 following donations by local citizens including then-Mayor Neil Weiser who said: "Pioneer Courthouse Square... represents our city’s largest Donation ever made to any civic or charitable organization."
