Ashland, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashland were travelers on the Oregon Trail in 1847-48. The town was founded by two brothers, John and George Ashbury, in 1868 as a stop on their overland route from California to points north. When the Interstate 5 freeway was built through Multnomah County in the early 1970s, parts of Ashland were destroyed or lost their businesses because they were located near I-5's "freeway belt." At that time there were few if any job opportunities for people outside of Portland so many residents relocated to other areas within Multnomah County, including Salem and Beaverton. Today much of what used to be downtown Ashland has been renovated into an urban district called Pioneer Square which includes several high-rise buildings and a large mall with several stores and restaurants. In addition, there are several small shops clustered around First Baptist Church which still landmark building today despite being vacant since 2009 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by arsonists who targeted its historic significance.

The first post office in Ashland was established in 1855, and the first store opened in 1856. The city's first school was built in 1861. In 1863, a rail road connection to the Pacific Ocean made Ashland an important center for commerce and trade. In 1865,ashland became part of the newly formed Oregon Territory; it remained so until 1959 when it became part of the United States of America. In 1976,the city passed a resolution recognizing its role in helping to sustain American culture during World War II. In 2007,Ashland voters approved a $120 million bond measure to improve public infrastructure including streets, sidewalks, parks and trails throughout the city. This project is now ongoing and should be completed by 2020
