Ashland, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous towns in the valley and has been growing steadily since its incorporation as a city in 1931. The history of Ashland begins with settlers arriving beginning in 1853. One of the first businesses to open in what is now Ashland was a grocery store named Aladdin's which operated from 1854-1857. In 1859, William Goodyear founded Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company on land that he had purchased northeast of town. Goodyear's original factory prospered until World War II when it became part of Raytheon Missile Systems Division. After the war, many local companies closed or merged into larger ones, including Western Electric Company (later GE), Oregon Oil Corporation (OOC), and Standard Oil (SO). By 1970, only two businesses remained: The grocery store and A&W restaurant which continued to operate until they were both closed in 1984. In 2001, voters approved an amendment to the city charter that created an estimated $136 million budget for infrastructure projects such as road improvements, water systems expansion, parks maintenance and new technology downtown; all designed to promote economic growth within Ashland while enhancing community amenities In 2006-2007 Voters passed Measure 1 which increased property values by 2%. This led to more jobs being brought into town as people realized there would be more money to be made if their homes were worth more than their neighbors'. After years of planning and engineering work by various stakeholders including City Manager Rick Knoppers and Mayor Mike Brownlow - who also spearheaded development funding initiatives - construction began on Phase I of Ashland's Waterfront Village project which consists of expansions for both the municipal water system and recreation areas along with new public transportation options for visitors Phase II will include construction on additional housing units along with renovation/updates to existing businessespaces such as restaurants/bars/stores within walking distance of urban cores; thisphase is currently planned for completion by 2020 .Phase III will consist primarily of resurfacing streetscape between Center Street eastward from Interstate 5th Avenue & westward from Stark Road; this phase should be complete by 2025 . Ashland, Oregon is an historic town in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Ashland County and its most populous county seat. It is located in the Central Oregon region of Oregon, on a bluff overlooking the Willamette River valley to the south and east. The first Europeans to arrived in what is now Ashland were two Catholic missionaries, Father Francisco Lopez and Father Pedro Ortega, on horseback from Mexican California in 1859. They journeyed upriver to Fort Vancouver where they delivered goods and water to American troops stationed there before returning upstream along the riverbank to their Mission Santa Fé de la Union (later Corpus Christi) near present-day Salem. In 1860 or 1861 Pedro Ortega's brother Miguel also founded a mission at Santiametro about northeast of present-day Ashland with help from his father-in-law José Morales y Galdirán. Spanish missionaries soon began arriving here as well; by 1865 there were six missions operating out of central Oregon territory controlled by Friar Francisco Javier Pacheco y Planes (1815–1882). Jesuit missionary Fray Antonio Sanchez arrived in 1868 from San Luis Potosi Mexico with 300 packhorse loads of supplies for his new mission at Santiametro; he erected a small chapel and built several farmhouses within two years. A year later another group of Jesuits under Father Manuel Nieto set out from Portland for what would become Multnomah County but only made it as far as La Grande before becoming lost near modern day Salem; they finally reached safety on October 15, 1870 while en route back across the Columbia River Gorge below Mount Hood. On February 20, 1871 Samuel Eaton organized a township association for residents of Whatcom County who wanted to leave Bentonville after its incorporation into Washington Territory; within three months he had formed nineteen townships including Ashland with a population of 572 people under one roof. On May 10, 1871 Eaton sent commissioners appointed by Congress to survey all land grants and Townships within central Oregon Territory which included all that now makes up Ashland County; they returned on June 3 with plans for a town site on lower Swenacker Creek adjacent to what is now downtownAshland (then called "Northwest Indian School"). On July 12th same year construction began on what would eventually become Municipal Hall just north of downtown when Drury Bros., builders/agents for The Dalles Railway Construction Co., came down river with five large drums filled with gravel and lime intendedfor building an artificial beach front along inland Willamette River - this project was aborted because no funds could be raised until better times! Ashland was founded in 1853 by General George Armstrong Custer and his associates. The town became a rail center, with the first railroad reaching Ashland in 1869. In 1903, the Ashland & Portland Railroad was merged into the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company.
