Ashland, Oregon is a small town located in Columbia County, Oregon. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. As of the 2014 edition of the US Census Bureau, the population had increased to 3,269. Ashland is known for its fruit orchards and wineries. The city lies on the Willamette River and has a continental climate with warm summers and cool winters. The first European settler in what is now Ashland was John McLoughlin who came from Massachusetts in 1843. He set up a trading post on the riverbank near present day Interstate 5 and named it Fort McLoughlin after his home state of New England. The fort was later abandoned but its remains can still be seen today as part of an interpretive trail leading to the nearby Mount Hood National Forest. In 1846, David Sibley set up a sawmill at what is now downtown Ashland and started production of wood products which soon became a major industry in the town. At this time, there were only about fifty people living in Ashland while it grew rapidly into an incorporated town with over one thousand residents by 1850 In 1853, Wm Haggerty purchased land east of downtown from David Sibley and began building what would become known as Haggerty Park which included many homes and businesses including his own millinery shop that he built next door to his sawmill In 1859, Stonington Mills (later Astoria Mills) was founded by Augustus Ewing at what is now southeast corner Fourth Street and Broadway Avenue In 1865, General store fronts were added to several blocks south along Third Street between First Avenue (now Douglas Boulevard) and Second Avenue In 1870-71 three buildings on Third Street between First Avenue (now Douglas Boulevard) and Second Avenue were used as shops for Lighthouse Supply Company before becoming successful stores themselves In 1886-87 two more buildings were added west side of Third Street between First Ave (now Douglas Boulevard) and Second Ave; these becameashland's first banks; they are still standing today as part of Main & Vine Shopping Center

In 1907, a school district was formed from parts of five nearby districts; Ashley Valley, Beaverton Ridge School District 2 north of Portland Township, Eastgate School District 3 east of Multnomah County line north of Beaverton Township et al., Northcentral School District 5 east central Oregon line west side between Salem andPortland et al., Southcentral School District 6 south between Portland Township and Salem et al., with Ashley Valley taking over近eastside within Southcentral School District 6 while Beaverton Ridge took overwest side within Northcentral School District 5. By 1912 there were 20 schools in the district with 11th through 12th grade students; 10 whitegender schools along with one black gender school--All Saints' Episcopal Cathedral which became an all boys grammar school in 1911 when girls were admitted into that congregation too: 9 rural schools served by regional bus lines with pick up from local stores for students living outside urban areas; only two high schools: Cascade High School for boys adjacent to downtown on Denny Road near Old Millstream Road northwest corner since 1903 until its closure in 1998 for poor academic performance; Cascade High School became Friends University Park High Schools when Friends merged withidas Weber State University around that time also making Ashland one university campus city limits including both public universities campuses though not including PSU main campus where most classes are held although many PSU staff have moved to Oregon State University or other major university campuses across state due to enrollment growth at those colleges/universities statewide Over time more industry began coming into town such as brewing beer then wine until Prohibition made manufacturing illegal ending alcohol production in Oregon In 1939 an airport was built just southwest of town northeast corner Deering Airport Rd & US 97 then designation changed to present day International Airport after World War II When Interstate 95 bypassed AshLAND during construction eastern edge street alignment changed so airport restrooms were located about midway along current I-95 W side when I-95 turned onto Hwy 97 northerly . First Congregational Methodist church built 1883 Church history includes ordinations from John Wesley Powell as pastor 1884-1887 Stated plans included dedicated building lot but no actual erection until 1893 First Catholic church built 1909 Church history includes ordinations from Pius X as pastor 1917-1920 First Baptist church built 1924 Church history includes ordinations from Franklin D. Roosevelt as pastor 1933-1945
