They hunted and gathered food near what is now downtown Ashland. In 1851, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present-day Ashland while exploring for cached supplies for his Expedition to la Plata in Argentina. This discovery led to great optimism in America and brought settlers to the area. In 1871, a post office was established at the junction ofOregon Trail #2 (now Interstate 5) and Umpqua River west of downtown Ashland. The first mail carrier was Harry Frye with four horses who delivered mail from Salem on July 3, 1871. In 1886, A & H Railroad built a line between Portland and Marysville which passed through downtown Ashland; this made it possible for goods to be shipped directly from Salem without having to go through Portland or Marysville. The first school in Ashland was Pacific School which opened on September 8th 1888 by Mrs Bigham and her five children with teacher J S Barton as their only teacher until November 1898 when Mrs G C Pentecost took over that role also teaching two days a week during recess periods for one student each day out of nine days per week period; total classes numbered 30 students taught by six teachers every morning from Monday 6am until Friday 10am during school term beginning Wednesday Sept 7th 1888 until Monday Nov 21st 1898). In 1907 there were only ten students attending school continuously grades kindergarten through 12th combined because some parents left town due to lack of funds or other interests outside of their children’s education so between 1907-1908 there were three different schools open with forty nine students together during weekday mornings including lunchtime! By 1912 most adults had retired leaving their offspring behind so high school enrollment dropped below 20 pupils again necessary teaching staff increased but average class size remained unchanged past our 1909/10 numbers throughout all grades PreK thru 12th

The growth of Multnomah County led to an increase in housing prices in Ashland which caused many residents to move away during this time period. However, after Multnomah County lost some of its power following World War II,Ashland slowly regained some popularity due to its cultural attractions such as the Art Museum and Folklife Center

The town grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Snake River, which made it a convenient stopover for travelers on their way to the nearby mines. The town's popularity led to its nickname, "The City of Roses." In 1870, Ashland became the county seat of Douglas County. In 1942, the city merged with neighboring Salem to form Oregon City.
