Ashland is a city located in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 54,711. Ashland is the county seat of Multnomah County. The city was founded on May 25, 1853 by Captain George Vancouver and his team of men as a fur-trading outpost on the boundary between Washington and Oregon. The name "Ashland" originated from an Indian word meaning "happy place." The first post office in Ashland was established on October 7, 1853. In 1857, the town site changed hands three times due to land disputes; it finally became Ashland's permanent home on July 1, 1860. In 1889, voters approved a $5 million bond referendum for schools throughout the county but this did not become reality until 1913 when money was appropriated from state coffers to build new high schools across Multnomah County including Ashland High School (now Portland State University). In 1893–1894 construction began on what would be known as Jordan Park which later becameMultnomah Stadium; now part of downtown Portland. In 1902–1903 work began on what would become Western Hall which still stands today as one of downtown's most popular attractions thanks to its unique features such as its two stories with four setbacks that create a unusual open plan design and its large skylight providing natural light into every room inside without artificial lights or windows. One of many important events during these early years took place when Portland Mayor Arthur Darlington called forashlanders to come together under one banner to form what became known asthe "Oregon Volunteers".
