Fremont decided to settled in this area as part of his plan to build a new settlement on the Columbia River where he thought there would be more opportunities for trade than he found east of the Rockies. He named his new town after himself, ashland being an Indian word meaning "the cleanest place." Fremont's settlement did not take very long to grow; within a year it had acquired a store and two blacksmiths. By 1854, it had also acquired its first post office which served as the community's center until 1861 when it became part of Clackamas County
