Ashland, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It was founded in 1852 by James Evans and his wife, Rachel. The town seat was moved to the current location in 1868. He built a log cabin near the present day intersection of State Route 97 and First Street in what is now downtown Ashland. In 1853, he married Rachel Cooley, who had also come from Kentucky that year. They soon started to grow corn and beans on their farmstead and began to trade goods with other settlers along the Willamette River. By 1860, they had five children: James (1851-1924), John (1855-1926), Julia (1858-1940), Mary Jane (1861-1945) and Anna (1864-1927). John Evans served as mayor of Ashland for two terms from 1897 to 1899 and 1904 to 1906. He also held several other offices in the community including justice of peace, postmaster, water commissioner and clerk of courts. In 1865, James Evans' son John married Emily Sturgis; they raised three children: Everett (born November 5th 1865), Lillian Maynard (born July 15th 1870) and Clarence Franklin Sturgis(born January 2nd 1874). After many years farming around central Oregon, he sold his land at about $4 an acre in 1902 to Jens Ludwigsen who organized what would become the Portland General Electric Company Limited out of it. With this new purchase came its own boom period for Ashland as construction began on numerous businesses such as banks, groceries & hardware stores etc… which attracted more people to live there during this time period including factory workers brought over by GEeks looking for opportunity outside their home states! During World War II most residents enlisted either actively or passively; however some men did return home after leaving military service early due to health reasons while others chose not to return at all due to social changes brought on by war production technologies like assembly lines etc… Many are buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery where many local businesses dotted blocks lining NW 6th Ave between SW Morrison & NE Columbia Streets were located prior too WWII when wealthier families could afford better burials despite offering much less money than private individuals!
