The first people to live in Ashland were the Chinook and the Deschutes. They started living there about 1823. The first post office was in Ashland about 1865. In 1907, the Oregon Railroad Company built a line from Portland to Ashland. The town name was changed from “Ashland” to “Portland” in 1912.
Ashland, Oregon is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon, on the Columbia River. The population was 25,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County and home to Ashland Regional Airport. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashland were French voyageurs in 1795-96 who named it "Aigle." A logging camp called Beaver Creek was established by Captain John McLoughlin in 1805 near present day Pioneer Square and remained active until 1818 when it burned down due to the forest fires that swept through Oregon that year. In 1826, James Kapp organized a group of loggers under his command and named their new town after himself, Kapp City. In 1839, John Day founded Pendleton with stores and homes at its core - this site would become the nucleus for much future development around Ashland as well as nearby Pendleton and Redmond. By 1861, Ashland had a population of 10 families and had become an important commercial center on the banks of the Columbia River serving both farmers and travelers along routes leading north from Portland into Canada or south to Seattle or Vancouver Island. During World War II many factories were built in Ashland including munitions plants such as Buick Arsenal (later General Dynamics), Wacoal Rubber Company (now Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Shipbuilding Corporation of America (now Boeing Co.), Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), Allied Chemical Corporation (ACI) – all contributing significantly to war production efforts across Northwest United States during those critical years. The city experienced rapid growth following World War II; by 1960 its population had reached 50,000 people and downtown was becoming one of the most vibrant areas in Northwest United States with high-rise buildings such as The Washington State University School Building and First Interstate Center/Oregon State Fairgrounds housing some of today's largest businesses in town. Downtown revitalization projects continue throughout this era with several blocks having been completely renovated since 2000 including Main Street between SW Morrison Rd./Ashlander Wayand SW Salmonberry Dr./US 11th St.–all resulting in increased foot traffic on these streets which have also seen an increase in business opportunities for residents within close proximity to downtowns throughout Southwest Portland

After the war ended,Ashland experienced rapid declines in its population until it reached its current size of 7,500 in 2000. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, much effort was put into developing agriculture in this region which would later lead to large populations that thrived economically until recent times when industry has become more predominant and has taken over most aspects of life here. Today Ashland is home to many cultural attractions including several museums as well as numerous businesses which contribute significantly to its economy; however some key factors that have kept this city afloat through these tough times include its strong public/private partnership infrastructure which allows for multiple governmental entities working together closely; top-notch schools which continue to produce high-quality graduates; and support from donations from individuals and businesses alike who believe that communities should be havens for opportunity rather than poverty traps
Ashland was founded in 1847 by George W. Ashby and his wife Martha. The town was named for the ash trees that were found near the town site. In 1854, the first school was built in Ashland and in 1865, the first post office was opened. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to its booming logging and agricultural industries. However, World War I destroyed much of these businesses, contributing to a decline in population during the 1920s. By the time of Ashland's incorporation as a city in 1932, only 1% of its residents were employed in industry. Despite this lack of economic stability, Ashland slowly regained some prosperity during the postwar decades thanks to new construction projects such as an airport and a library. In recent years, however, crime rates have surged and public services have been struggling to keep up with resident demand.
