In 1811, Jedediah Smith visited Fort Vancouver again and called it "the most beautiful place I have ever seen." He described it as having a large pike pond with lotus flowers growing thereabouts, lodges made of logs covered with thatch or tarpaulin,Indians playing games near by while women cooked food over an open fire,and children running around in stilts because they could not climb trees because of its height. In 1864–1865 white settlers from Illinois arrived at what is now Bend when they traveled downriver on the Oregon Trail to found new homes away from slavery plantations back then. A group of them founded what became Benton County in 1866 after voting on March 10 at a meeting held at Fort Hall Indian Council under Chief Joseph's guidance to create government within their tribal lands free from anterior yoke restrictions enforced by federal officials operating out of Portland,Oregon Territory north of Walla Walla River where contemporary Ashland now stands. Withdrawing immediately southward along Washington Street towards Interstate 5 they named their new community "Benton" after their newly Found Lande
