Albany, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem–Keizer Metropolitan Statistical Area. Albany has been inhabited by Native American people for over three hundred years and began to be developed as a town in 1885. In 1913, Albany became one of the first towns in Multnomah County to adopt an ordinance regulating smoking within its limits. In 1917, the Albany Manufacturing Company was founded here and continued operations until 1923 when it moved to Portland. The Albany Manufacturing Company manufactured items such as vacuum cleaners and radios. It also produced candy bars, pies, cigarettes and other products. The town's history can be traced back to 1885 when Captain John Crouse arrived in what is nowMultnomah County with hisOregon Trail party from Fort Hall Dakota Territory. After arriving in what is now Albany he named it after his home state of New York City (then Buffalo). At that time there were only about five thousand people living on the entire Pacific Northwest frontier area including Multnomah County! In 1887Captain Crouse erected a log cabin on land which he donated to the Town of Albany through deed given December 7th, 1886 by him and others present at platting out new territory east of Willamette River not yet claimed by any party or Settler(s). This original settler’s cabin – still standing today – was used as a meeting place for selectmen during their annual meetings held near this spot; also served as storehouse for local produce hauled into town by wagonloads from various local farms during winter months…A large brick building constructed circa1914-18 (now Historical museum) served as Post Office Department headquarters until 1945 when it burned down due to arsonist damage while serving as social hall for community meetings preceding & following fire suppression efforts which destroyed most all buildings within minutes ! Albany experienced some modest commercial success outseting with sales of goods brought into town by local farmers during winter months; however later growth led to increased reliance on imported goods resulting in loss of local jobs & isolation from larger markets…the result being more serious than mere economic setback because it undercut Community spirit & inhibited future growth potential! Albinos were among early settlers here but soon gave way to Caucasians who had more opportunity then ever before thanks largely to opening up new hunting grounds west of the Wallowa Mountains! Although few left permanently after 1870 most closed down smelters along Witham Creek mining district due largely To competition from gold rush era mills adjacent Kaiser Aluminum works - mill owners having chased Albino workers away en masse prior settlement !! By 1910 majority non-white permanent residents consisted mostly Anglo Saxon families descendants thereof continuing thru 1990s !! Most recently recent arrivals have been Vietnamese refugees since1991 !! Total population: 521
Albany, Oregon was founded in 1892 by N.W.A.C.H. (Nathan Wilhelm Ackerman) and his wife, Fannie Varner Ackerman, on a ranch property east of the Willamette River. The Ackermans were the first white people to settle in what is now Albany County and are credited with helping to create the town's unique character. The Ackermans were motivated to establish a small community because they believed that Oregon would be a better place for their children to grow up than California or any other state in the Union. They also wanted their children to have access to education and opportunities unavailable to most other Oregonians at the time. Since its founding, Albany has been home to many notable individuals including Orson Bean, who received his law degree from Yale University in 1902; Ezra Taft Benson, Jr., who served as president of Harvard University from 1930-1939; Angus King, who was elected U.S. senator from Maine in 2002 and became the country's first openly gay U.S. senator; and Dick Cheney, who served as Vice President of United States under George W Bush from 2003-2007
