Albany, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 572 at the 2010 census, down from 693 at the 2000 census. It is situated on the banks of the Columbia River, about 25 miles northwest of Portland. The first people to live in Albany were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near what is now downtown Albany. In 1842, John McLoughlin founded what became known as McLoughlin Lumber Company in Albany. The company built mills around Albany until it closed its doors in 1908. In 1865, Clifton Coulter established a sawmill on the banks of the river near present-day Albany. Coulter's mill produced lumber for buildings and other objects until it closed in 1910. In 1907, Alva Janssen purchased land east of present-day Albany from George Waddell for $5,000 cash and began to build a farmstead there called "Janssen's Hill". Janssen developed his farm into a thriving agricultural community that continued to grow until he died in 1948. His wife took over his farm after his death and continues to operate it today. During World War II, many residents of Albany served in military units such as the United States Coast Guard or U.S Army Air Forces; some even stayed behind after hostilities ended and started Families First Cooperative Extension Service programs which continue to this day (www2). Today, Albany remains an agricultural community with small businesses providing services such as grocery stores, banking institutions/credit unions and vehicle rental businesses among others; but its main industry has become professional services including law enforcement/security consulting; health care operations; real estate brokerage/investment; accounting and bookkeeping services; transportation management

Other early settlers include John Huffman (1869-1925), Jacob Gossett (1870-1955), Rasmus Olsen (1872-1950), Peder Nordland (1874-1946), Anders Eriksen (1878-1960), Ole Hansen III (1880-1959), Thorolf Rasmussen (1882-1964), Jens Høgstad (1885-1969), Hans Hermansen( 1888–1974)and August Larsen( 1889–1982). The town rapidly grew throughout its early years due to its location along the Snake River and its access to transportation including railroads and stagecoaches. By 1892, there were over 100 people living in Albany! In 1897, grocery store owner Ole Hanson donated land for a schoolhouse which would serve the town until 1925 when it moved to its current location at 9 East Main Street (). In 1907, two brothers named Harry & Jesse Larson started aleather making business at their house on West Main Street (). This industry quickly became one of Albany's most successful businesses; it operated until 2001. By 1912 there were almost 200 people living in Albany! The population continued to grow throughthe late 1800s and into the 1920s with waves of newcomers arriving from all over Scandinavia .
Albany was founded in 1847 by Michael and Anna Warner. It became a ghost town in the early 1900s due to the dry climate and lack of water resources. In 1921, it was renamed Albany Oregon after the state's capital, Salem, Oregon. The town experienced another period of decline during World War II when many residents left for war-time jobs. Albany reopened in 1946 as a small rural community with few amenities. The population peaked at around 100 in the late 1960s but has declined since then due to subdivisions and other changes in the area.
