Gun targets have been around in Albany, Oregon for over 100 years. The first target was made by a man named John Myrick in 1872. It was a 250 pound blacksmith’s dummy that could be hit with a ball and chain. Shortly after this, someone started making small wooden targets out of dowels and nails. These targets would be shot at from a distance to see if they could hit the object. In 1906, someone began Manufacturing Gun Targets- an early company that produced Wooden Targets Made in America. This company made artificial objects such as bulls’ eyes and stars on woodblocks that could be hit with a ball and chain or any modern weapon range finder device. In the 1940s, guns were added to the list of weapons available to target shooters in Albany. A gun range was built nearby which became known as “The Big Red Target Garden” because of its size and number of targets available.
