A Brief History of Albany, Oregon Albany was founded in 1869 by James O. Work and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the capital of New York State, Albany. Work had come to the United States from Scotland and wanted to find a place where he could start a business. He soon realized that the area around what is now Albany was perfect for him to set up shop. The first settlers in Albany were men who had emigrated from Russia and Siberia. They arrived in 1869 and started a farm on the east side of present-day Albany. It wasn't until 1870 that they built a cabin near the current site of downtown Albany. This initial settlement was short-lived because there were no permanent residents and it soon became clear that this location would not be viable as a town longterm. In 1871, James Fenton came to the area and began developing land on the west side of present-day Bellevue. He used his own money to buy land, laid out streets, built homes, and brought in supplies for his new community – all without government assistance or support from those in charge back home in Scotland! The pioneer spirit of these early people can still be seen today in Bellevue – they refused to let anything stop them from starting their own businesses or creating their own community here! Bellevue quickly grew into one of the most important communities onthe Oregon coast because it offered goods and services that helped make life easier for its inhabitants: groceries, transportation, schools, health care, etcetera. It wasn’t until 1938 that Bellevue formally incorporated as a city; at this time it had over 100 citizens! Today Bellevue is an active part of both Portland and Salem – with both cities recognizing its importance within their respective populations!
