Albany is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 5,798 at the 2010 census. Albany is part of the Salem-Keizer Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located on the banks of the McKenzie River, Albany is one of two communities in Willamette County that are both named for Albany, New York – the other being Bend. It has been settled by European pioneers since 1848 and became an incorporated municipality in 1907. As one of Oregon's oldest towns, Albany has a rich history dating back to when it was first fur-traded posts along the Columbia River. In 1824, George Marsh founded what would become Albany as a trading post on land now belonging to Portland. In 1827, he built a log cabin and named it "Albany." By 1830, he had several stores and land sales underway; he later became mayor of Portland and served from 1836 until his death in 1850. In 1847, John McLaughlin laid out a road from Portland to Whatcom via Milwaukie and Canby Roads; this route would eventually become U . S . Route 40. On July 14, 1907, Albany incorporation took place under Oregon law with Wilmotts as its first mayor. At that time there were just five residents living in what is now downtown Albany: four farmers and one mechanic/driver who did odd jobs for people living near the river or fishing upstream; three schoolteachers (one girl); one newsman (a boy); one salesman (a man) who sold goods door-to-door; and two laboring women working in local mills (later replaced by local home businesses). A post office was established at Albany on October 1st, 1907; mail was delivered through Milwaukie between then and 1911 when snow chains were required on all vehicles entering town during winter weather conditions according to state statute 20–6–1(c). The first postmaster general was J . W . Aiken who held office from 1909 until 1914 when he succeeded Halsey Davenport Jr.; Aiken remained stationed at Albany until his retirement on June 15th 1917 becoming only the secondholder after Pulteney Condon Sr.. He retired effective September 30th 1917 having sat continuously since April 6th 1916 which made him age 77 years old at that time! His successor Wm Sibley lasted only 3 months before leaving for unknown reasons also effective September 30th 1917 due to age 78 years old just 4 months after taking over! When you look up State Street today you will see where Halsey Ave., once ran right next to our present day Post Office building! This street name comes from Mr Halsey himself who actually moved our current building across SR 2nd St., across from downtown onto this property when we purchased it back in 1973! We have kept most if not all of our original architecture including the front porch inside where Mrs Sibley used to sit while receiving her mail…..in fact many people still remember her sitting outside during particularly cold days……….thank goodness for technology today because she no longer sits inside waiting for her mail 🙂 Thanks again Mrs Sibley…..for always being so understanding about our busy schedule
