The early days were difficult for Albany because there were no roads into town and people had to walk or horseback ride to get around. However, over time Albany grew into one of Oregon's most vibrant communities with businesses including a grocery store (now closed), hardware store, bank (now defunct), livery stable/cabaret house (closed), movie theater (closed), health club/spa (closed), bowling alley/laundromat (closed). In recent years many small businesses have closed downtown while others have relocated within walking distance of the central business district; however all have contributed significantly to economic vitality for bothopersand locals alike. Today Albany celebrates its 375th anniversary with many events including an annual parade through downtown streets chaired by Mayor Donny Petrisch followed by several concerts at local venues throughout September each year culminating in an outdoor fireworks display on State Street during Columbus Day Weekend

The Experiment Station was responsible for conducting many scientific experiments that led to improve agriculture in Whatcom County. In 1909, brothers Charles and William Hildebrandt bought from John Tilton his share of the Experiment Station and continued working there until their death in 1970.
