Albany, Oregon is a small town in the Klamath National Forest on the east side of the Cascades. The community was founded in 1903 by Reuben and Anna Haskell and their families as a result of their land purchase from the United States government. Albany became an agricultural settlement, with dairy, hay, and cattle production being its mainstay. The Haskells were also instrumental in founding the nearby community of Sisters (now Sisters City) in 1916. In 1960, Albany passed through a process known as "voluntary annexation" by the city of Portland, Oregon. With its new municipal boundaries, Albany lost much of its historical significance but retains some unique features including its two churches - First Congregationalist United Church and Parish Hall; its post office; and its Community Development Services Department which provides social services to the town's residents. The first settlers to Albany came from New England during the 1800s. One group that arrived in 1805 was led by Reverend John Eliot who named his settlement after his hometown of Auburn, Massachusetts where he had been born three years earlier. Another group that arrived in 1807 included Captain Samuel Morse who built a flour mill on what is now State Street while another group that arrived in 1809 included William Fenton who platted what is now Main Street. The early settler population consisted of men only with no women allowed to reside within one-hundred yards of anymale living quarters at the time which limited interaction among them for fear thereof would lead to marital discord or religious differences. By 1814 there were five families residing within Albany Township limits with sixty acres surveyed for agriculture purposes alone! In 1850 various farmers began moving into what is now Albany township from adjacent counties such as Douglas, Linn and Wasco due to increasing demand for farmland around Bendigo along the railroad corridor connecting Portland with Seattle and Vancouver BC respectively. By 1860 there were over eighty families living within Albany Township limits with nearly four hundred acres surveyed for agriculture use alone! During both World Wars many jobs were available in Boeing Plant northwest of Bendigo working on aircraft production lines such as those used on D-9s during World War II or later at Kaiser Aluminum Workshops near Hood River Falls during WWII 1945-1946 when aluminum was produced using forced labor techniques called "Hollywood sweatshops." After World War II many people left rural areas for urban centers such as Portland looking for opportunities encountered during this period known as "the Great Migration." During this era many businesses closed down because few people could afford to retire early due to economic recession aftermath throughout America during this time period dubbed "The Great Depression." Many people took up farming or other forms of employment following these difficult times although most farms struggled through 1951 when television replaced radio as America's primary form Of News/Information Distribution!
Albany, Oregon was founded in 1872 by George Armstrong Custer. The town was named for Albany, New York, where he had been born in 1829. The first post office in the area was established in 1875. In 1907, the town became a city and has since grown to over 20,000 residents.
