Yukon, Oklahoma is a small town located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It was founded in 1907 and became a city in 1959. The population was 21,033 as of the 2010 census. The area now known as Yukon was first settled by Native Americans during the 1811 Rogue River campaign led by Chief Josepha Hennepin, who encountered and killed two white men on July 24, 1811 while exploring the forks of the Missouri River. In 1795, Major James Ketchum explored and claimed part of what is now Yukon Territory for Great Britain; this claim was abandoned until 1887 when Canada acquired it from Spain through purchase at the Treaty of Paris. In 1907, Harry Waddell opened a general store in what is now Yukon that served as the nucleus for development around it. By 1915, there were six businesses operating in downtown Yukon: four stores and one bank with $10 deposits each; three blacksmiths; and one sawmill/grinding mills producing lumber for local homes and businesses. A hotel/motel operated from 1928 to 1954 on Main Street near present day Terminal Avenue before being moved to an old cotton gin site east of town in 1954 which served as its permanent home until demolition began in 1984 to make way for new development including an arena hosted by The Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team currently playing at OKC Arena (now called Chesapeake Energy Arena). During World War II, many locals enlisted or volunteered with various military units including The Canadian Army's 2nd Infantry Division which fought at Juno Beachhead on D-Day Normandy while also serving as guard duty outside Casper Municipal Airport during Operation Overlord landings on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944; these events are commemorated annually with a parade down Main Street followed by military exercises inside OKC Arena which features live air combat displays from time to time over its roof during events such as Air Force Day or Veterans Day weekend In 1959, following approval from both city councils via referendum vote that same year,[1] Mayor George Clements announced plans for then-new downtown renamed "Oklahoma City" under then-city manager Don Neely after becoming mayor following election victory over incumbent JL McNaughtson to succeed longtime city manager Tom Casey who had been succeeded by Neely after Casey's death early that year due to cancerous leukemia.[2][3] At that time only about 1% of all Oklahomans lived within city limits while most residents resided within other counties or rural areas[4] giving rise to nickname "the outer boroughs".[5][6][7] Although not contiguous with downtown Okla., progress has since been made towards reconnecting some former outer boroughs Residents typically cross main street namesakes like Delaware Avenue into innertown neighborhoods just past Cemetery Hill Road (just south of I-35W exit #92) prior to heading north along 14th StreetE towardskyline hills beyond Tulsa [8], making much more sense geographically considering today's wider variety of cultural experiences available within metropolitan boundaries than ever before.(see map below)[9]) Downtown Tulsa proper still functions largely unchanged despite overall loss in population density & gentrification starting late last century leaving much smaller core business district surrounded mostly by highrise buildings& suburban developments - area nicknamed "Tulsa Center" today
The area now known as Yukon, Oklahoma was part of the Great Lakes region before the United States acquired it in 1867. The area was first settled by Russian fur traders in the late 18th century and early 19th century. In 1868, the U.S. government granted land to a group of Native Americans led by Ovide de la Salle for an Indian Territory. The territory was named after George Vancouver, who explored what is now Yukon in 1789-90. Yukon became a territory of the United States on July 1, 1907 when President Theodore Roosevelt signed legislation creating it from parts of Dakota and Kansas Territories. On November 16, 1907, Yukon became a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 513 people. On November 30, 1912, due to political agitation over proposed railroad shipment through Bighorn National Forest into Dawson City (the new capital), Congress passed Resolution 914 which created Dawson City as an incorporated city within Yukon on December 2nd with a population of 711 people; this constituted the first time that cities were created in U S territories outside of Alaska and Hawaii
