On the morning of July 17, 1907, a group of men led by Captain Frank Hall heard a report that a large herd of cattle was on the horizon. The party set out at once and soon arrived at an area where they could see the herds. What they didn't know was that the Cattlemen's Protective Union (CPU) had organized a posse to protect the cows. The CPU began firing shots into the air as the men approached, but no one was hit. The party then started up a riverbank and rode over to where the cows were hiding. Afteralo took some pictures and negatives of what he had seen before returning to the CPU headquarters in Topeka. The next day, all of Oklahoma City came out to see what was going on. They found many newspapers with stories about how well-armed and well-funded the CPU had been in response to this peaceful protest by farmers against prices being raised too high by Standard Oil Company representatives.
