Yukon is a small town located in the Oklahoma Panhandle region. The population was 2,034 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Yukon was first inhabited by the Kiowa, Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. In 1867, prospectors discovered gold on what is now known as Yukon Peninsula. The town of Yukon was founded on October 14, 1887, by J.B. Macdonald and others from the Dawson City Gold Rush team. At its peak in 1907, Yukon had a population of 1,500 people and boasted a school, stores and churches. However, economic recession during World War I caused a decline in population and businesses until the late 1920s when new jobs opened up in the coppermining industry. During World War II, many local residents worked on shipbuilding projects off the Coast of Alaska; however this ended after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 which destroyed most of their factories along with much of their shipping capacity within months. The post-World War II period has been characterized as one of growth for Yukon as more businesses have moved into town from outside to exploit natural resources such as oil and gas reserves located near the peninsula where mining began again beginning in 1974 following an extraction moratorium implemented by President Richard Nixon due to environmental concerns over mining operations adjacent to grasslands home to numerous endemic species including grizzly bears

These areas are much larger than Yukon and have a much different history with regards to mining, exploration, trade and settlement. The population of Northwest Territories is around 7 million while Alaska’s population is around 16 million. Yukon has a rich history with regards to its landscape as well as its people. One of the most famous landmarks in town is Mount Lawley which is located just outside of town on private property. It’s said that this mountain can be seen from anywhere in town! Another famous landmark is White Sands National Monument which is located about 25 minutes away from town by car or bus on Highway 324A (Route 66). This monument features large stone formations that date back Millions years!
In 1907, the first post office in Yukon was established. In 1914, the first telephone service was offered in Yukon. In 1928, a hospital and clinic were opened in Yukon. The population of Yukon grew rapidly during the 1930s and 1940s due to new mining and ranching projects conducted by Englishman John Sweeny and his partners. The population peaked at over 10,000 in 1950 before dwindling as a result of successive waves of immigration. By 1971, the population had decreased to less than 1,000.
