Yukon is a small, isolated community in Haskell County, Oklahoma. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Great Plains and has an area of 10 square miles. The name "Yukon" is from the Kutchin language and means "The Place Where We Are." Yukon was founded by fur traders in 1887. In 1930, it became a town and was named for John D. Yukon, a member of Congress from Oklahoma who served as assistant secretary of state for Indian Affairs in Franklin D. Roosevelt's first term as president. Today, Yukon is known for its mineral resources such as gold and silver; its natural beauty with herds of cattle and sheep roaming around the landscape; and its small-town atmosphere which can be found primarily within the boundaries of Haskell County -home to nearby Moore (population: 100,000), Muskogee (population: 190,000), Lawton (population: 145,000), McAlester (population: 155,000), Ponca City (population: 110,000) - making it one of the most rural areas in Oklahoma.

Yukon was one of the most significant U.S. territories when it was acquired by the United States in 1903. In 1912, President Theodore Roosevelt created the Alaska Territory out of what was then Oregon Territory; Yukon became part of that territory along with parts of western Canada. In 1933, Congress passed the Indian Reorganization Act which changed how Native American tribes were organized into bands or clans within reservations It also designated certain areas as White River Reserve which would be off limits to Indian habitation until further notice This measure effectively ended any native land ownership within the boundaries of modern day Yukon

The land that is now the Yukon Territory was first hunted by the Inuit people, who arrived there about 4000 years ago. The first white settlers arrived in 1881, and they started to trade with the Inuit. By 1912, the area that is now the Yukon Territory had been divided into two parts, and one part became known as Nunavut.
