Gun sights are a type of sighting device used in firearms, specifically for aiming. The firstgun sights were crude devices that only utilized rudimentary methods such as use of a protractor or compass to point them in the desired direction. In 1892, an American inventor named George Hargrave developed what is now considered the world's first true gun sight, which he called the "Hargrave Sight." It consisted of a metal disk with two holes punched through it and hung from a swivel arm that could be turned to aim various distances. This primitive design was quickly replaced by more advanced models over time. In Yukon, Oklahoma, there are several examples of early gun sights. One is the Old West Gun Sight located at the Yukon State Fairgrounds. This wooden structure was built in 1897 and has been used as a gun sight ever since. The other example is the rifle range located on US-412 north of town. This simple structure was built in 1903 and still uses its original design today. The Yukon Rifle Association was founded in 1912 and is the oldest regional rifle organization in the United States. The YRA has a rich history dating back to when rifles were first introduced into the Yukon Territory. In 1912, handguns were not allowed in the territorial government and citizens had to rely on shotguns for defense. A committee chaired by Lieutenant Governor John Vickers recommended that rifles be introduced into the territory to provide a more effective means of defense against pending Indian attacks. On July 1, 1912, a bill was passed by the Territorial Parliament authorizing arms shipments from Canada and authorizing purchases of rifles by residents of the territory under license from the Canadian government. On October 28, 1912, Lieutenant Governor John Vickers issued an order compelling all local self-defense forces within the Yukon Territory to arm themselves with rifles or face disbandment. This order became known as “The” Order of The Yukon Rifle Association (OYRA). By 1915, OYRA had renamed itself “The Yukon Rifle Association” and began operations at an old munitions depot located on Whitehorse Creek northeast of Dawson City. Over time, OYRA grew into one of North America’s most powerful rifle organizations with branches throughout Canada and North America. In 1970, YRA merged with The Canadian Shooting Sports Federation (CSSF) which at that time boasted over 350 member organizations across Canadan provinces including Ontario; Quebec; Manitoba; Saskatchewan; Alberta; British Columbia; Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Newfoundland & Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Yukon is a small town in Oklahoma, located just north of the Canadian border. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area and lies on the eastern edge of the Oklahoma Panhandle. The area that would become Yukon was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1868, it became part of Indian Territory when that territory was divided among the United States and Canada. The town began to form in earnest after gold was discovered in Yukon County in 1903. That year, a post office was established at nearby Butte City and development continued until 1907, when a dam was built upstream and water supply problems led to heavy erosion which destroyed most of the village. In 1912, an exchange post between Canada and America saw two men from Yukon County arrive in Tulsa to buy goods before returning home with $2,000 worth of gold nuggets. By 1915, only about 100 people were living in what is now Yukon because much of that land had been lost to erosion or farming activities. In 1928-29, stockade walls were constructed around what is now downtown to protect settlers from Kiowa Apache Indians who had started raiding their settlements there since 1900. In 1939-40, during World War II as part of US military efforts against Japan (the Japanese call it "the war to end all wars"), elements from several villages surrounding Yukon gathered together under leadership from Zenko Miyamoto to fight for United States forces against Japanese forces occupying northern Oklahoma throughout 1942-1945; later known as Battle Creek War (1943-1945). The decisive battle occurred on July 16th 1945 near present day Pryor where some 4500 American troops surrounded 6000Japanese soldiers entrenched along Route 66 east of Battle Creek; eventually leading to unconditional surrender by Japanese commanders
Gun sights have been around for centuries, and in some cases there have been multiple generations of them. In the earliest days, sighting devices were rudimentary affairs consisting of a piece of wood or leather with a notch in it that allowed the observer to aim at a target. The first firearms used iron sights and these had to be moved about due to their sensitive location on the gun barrel. One early adopter of iron sights was Julius Caesar who used them on his bows and arrows. Iron sights began to be replaced by glass optics beginning in the 18th century. Glass is much more durable than metal and can last many years without need for maintenance; this makes glass sights ideal for use with modern firearms which require periodic cleaning/adjustment. When optical devices became available that could produce variable magnification (as they did with telescopes),Gun sight technology advanced rapidly and eventually incorporated both aperture (the size of the opening through which light is admitted) as well as power (the amount of power required to achieve desired results). This gave us our most familiar firearm sight-a bright circle or dot within an image created by one or more lenses placed over an objective lens-and also made it possible for shooters to engage targets at long range without ever having to leave their home environment!
