In 1907, Yukon Territorial Legislature passed a law that made it illegal to carry any gun without a license. The law was repealed in 1919, but the practice of carrying firearms continued until the early 21st century. Gun safety and regulation were not major topics of discussion at the time, as guns were seen as an essential part of Yukon society. However, after World War I and the repeal of the territorial legislature’s ban on handguns, there was a rise in gun ownership and use in Yukon. The first handgun registration program in Yukon began in 1925. Registration allowed for better tracking of handguns and gave owners access to insurance and legal protection should their weapon be seized by authorities or used ina crime. As guns became more popular, criminals began to fear them more than individuals who possessed only hunting rifles or shotguns. As a result, laws were passed regulating gun possession and use; these laws remain in place today. - In 1934, the Supreme Court ruled that citizens have a right to bear arms within their own state boundaries under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. This ruling provided much needed security for Americans travelling throughout Canada and Mexico following World War II (see Gun Rights Movement). - In 1990, Yukon eliminated its prohibition against owning assault rifles . . . however this change did not makegun possession or use legal anywhere within the territory

Yukon was one of the most important U.S. territories in terms of oil production during the early 20th century. In 1899, the territorial government passed an act declaring that all mineral rights within the territory were owned by the people thereof and that no company could own or control any mineral veins or beds without their consent. This Act led to many large companies establishing themselves in Yukon, including Standard Oil Company, Northern Mines Company, and Canadian Uranium Company. The first residents of Yukon arrived in 1867 when traders from Canada landed at what is now Littlerock Landing on the Klondike River. By 1870, over 1,600 people had settled in the region around Fort Smith (now Norman). Many soldiers who served in World War I stationed here after being discharged from service in Canada. In 1920, 400 more people moved into the territory; this growth continued until it reached its peak during World War II when it reached 2,000 residents. During World War II many men lost their lives working at a munitions plant located near Whitehorse; however, many others found employment building military aircrafts and submarines vital to American war efforts. As a result of this industry growth, as well as mining activity conducted by both national and international companies throughout much of the post-war years there was little impact on population size long term; however beginning with Expo '88 (the Alaska Purchase), which took place in June 1988[1], local population began to increase significantly due to an influx of tourists looking for natural resources available close to home – especially diamonds and other minerals moguls were attracted to Yukon’s vast coastline due to its high availability rates for these resources.[2]
The Yukon Territory was created on July 1, 1912 from the southern half of the Dakota Territory. The territory was named after George A. Yukon, a Canadian explorer and politician who had explored in the area during the 1880s.
