In 1868, the U.S. government purchased the land that became Yukon from the Canadian government. The area was then divided into two counties, Dawson County and White River County. In 1907, Dawson County was renamed Yukon Territory and White River County became Northern Oklahoma. The territorial government was dissolved in 1912 and the area was organized as a census-designated place (CDP) in 1932. In 2006, it was merged with Tulsa to form the Tulsa-Yukon CDP.
