The Yukon Airgun Association was organized in 1954. The first club meeting was held on September 12th at the home of Mrs. Mary Sievers, who had been instrumental in bringing about the organization. In 1957, the association moved to its present location, which is a three-story building located at 5500 E. Broadway Street in Yukon. The membership has grown rapidly over the years and now includes more than 120 individual members from all of Yukon County. In 1969, the association presented an award to Mr. Lester Wirtz for his contribution to airguns education in Yukon County. At that time, Mr. Wirtz was president of the Oklahoma chapter of NRA and had just started teaching airguns classes at Eastern Central High School in McAlester, Oklahoma.

However, during World War II, Dawson lost its status as a capital due to its strategic location within range of Nazi Germany’s weapons plants. In 1945, it reverted back to being the capital of Yukon after being re-established as such by Congress under Temporary Authority No. 965A
In 1907, Yukon was the first territorial capital in Oklahoma. The city of Lawton was founded in 1909 and became the capital in 1912.
