Woodward, Oklahoma is a town of around 60,000 people that is located on the edge of the Wichita Mountains. The city was founded in 1907 by George W. Woodward and his brother-in-law, Odell H. McFarlane. In 1911, Woodward bought land in what is now the heart of the city and began to build a home called The Cedars. It was here that he first developed his optical equipment business called The Optical Company of America. In 1935, Woodward donated two acres of land to the City of Wichita Falls for use as a public square and parade ground. This area became known as Woodward Park after him and it served as an important center for local commerce until it was destroyed by a fire in 1984. However, during its time as Woodward Park, the square hosted many events such as baseball games, dances and conventions related to optical equipment sales and service (OECD). In 1978, General Motors purchased The Optical Company from Mr. McFarlane for $2 million dollars which allowed GM to focus on its own engineering efforts instead of developing products for other companies such as The Optical Company (OTC). OTC continued to produce visual inspection devices but soon began producing scientific instrumentation products such as digital microscopes under their new name GEMINI Technology Incorporated (GTI). After years of production growth for both products lineages at GEMINI Technology Inc., OTC folded in 1992 due to legal challenges brought about by TI’s product roadmap diverging from GM’s original competitive strategy with respect to semiconductor MEMS technology objectives (See footnote 1 below).
